[Log] Shooting the breeze

===============================================
Crew Commons, Grace O'Malley [Boros]
===============================================
Josephine is sitting in what looks to be a meditative posture, except that clearly she is not meditating. "Alright," she says, with a small smile. "I think that could make the difference," she admits, her expression clearly one of great tenderness for the man who is there. Her hand lightly rests upon his arm. "We'll have that talk soon. Besides, there's something else I wanted to discuss with you, when we have the opportunity."

Saienne lopes out from the portside cabins with somewhat of a clatter - impossible not to announce one's arrival with boots on deck, sometimes. She slows down a little, seeing Josephine and Hatch - and more importantly, Josephine's expression - in conversation in the common area. "'Scuse me," she says, somewhat gruffly, as she navigates around the furniture, heading for the galley.

Hatch 's head comes up slightly as he watches Saienne enter into the common room, takes him a moment to place her before he lays his head back down upon Jo's leg. "Ain't no need to excuse yourself." Hatch calls over with a bit of a smile but in softer and warmer tones, "I'm here, what do you want to talk about?"

Josephine waves cheerfully to Saienne and offers her a smile. "There's still some fresh coffee left, I believe, so feel free to help yourself." Her smile softens a touch as she sort of hugs the one who is using her leg as a pillow. "It's not a conversation for the commons," she explains. "Not because it's embarrassing or anything. But it's serious and rather personal. Oh, and I also wanted to talk to you about the new guy you've got working under you as well, if you haven't already talked with him first. But, that's a different matter entirely. There's always so much I want to say to you," she sighs.

Saienne slips into the galley, her footfalls now muffled by the calico rugs. "Just came in for some..." - and she tails off as Josephine mentions the coffee, and aims a lop-sided grin in her direction. "That was exactly what I wanted to hear," she says. She reaches for one of the coffee cups and starts to hum, barely audible.

"Guess were going to have to find some time for that soon here, eh?" Hatch says as he sits up slowly to look to her face, head canting slightly to the side. There is such depth of emotion in that single glance, and the warmth of his smile, a sharp contrast to who he was on the Apollo.

Josephine cannot help but smile, to be lost in his smile, to be captured by his gaze. It's awful, really, not to mention illogical, and...oh bother: It's wonderful. She leans forward to press her lips to his cheek. "Soon, yes," she repeats, softly. Another slow breath allows her to move her gaze, to remember duty, and common good manners. "You let me know if you can't find something you need, Saienne. It takes a while to get used to how things are arranged around here."

The coffee as it is poured fills the galley with its rich scent. "Can I get either of you anythin'?" Saienne asks, glancing over at them again. Again, she perceives the significant looks travelling between the pair, and, bringing the cup of steaming black coffee to her lips, says before sipping. "I ain't over-eager to be the gooseberry in this here gatherin', but did I hear correct that we're sittin' on Boros on account of the recent excitement?"

Hatch who is sitting upon the floor before Jo, whom is perched atop the coffee tablem and Saienne is in the kitchen with a mug of coffee contemplating the distance that seems to be lacking between the two. Hatch folds his hands into Jo's as he glances past her to answre Sai's question. "Aye, that would be correct. Were going to sit tight and quiet till things get nice and sorted out."

Josephine was meditating at some point, but clearly she isn't now. She holds the hands of the man sitting before her tightly. "I find it remarkable the sort of intricate problems people can create for themselves," she observes, quietly, letting Hatch answer the question in a more official manner. "And, no thanks. I'm fine. I think there are some biscuits in the cupboard, if you want some with your coffee."

Saienne's dark eyes cloud for a moment and she gazes out at the middle-distance over the rim of her coffee cup. "Ah," she says. Then, taking a large gulp of the hot liquid, says evenly. "Well, I reckon that sounds like a sensible enough idea. Folk often underrate the wisdom of layin' low." She nods a thank you to Josephine and turns back to the galley to hunt for the biscuits.

Lucinda makes a quiet entrance into the commons, but its an easy thing to do when you're wrapped up in your own thoughts. Coffee seems her goal, and she makes her way in that direction.

"You know, it's nice.. alot of things on Grace seem to be just falling into place." Hatch says in soft tones, "Don't know, none of it makes any real sense, some of it does. Alot of it feels right." He rests his head upon Jo's lap again, closing his eyes and considers things, they flick open at the sound of footsteps again taking note of a pair of polished black boots, black sweater, and those tattoos also cause a mild smirk as he comments, "Another peice of the puzzle, a doctor who's not utterly malicious. Most of the time anyway." He says in a softer tone but his voice raises as he makes the next comment, "Right Sai?"

Sitting on the coffee table, in what looks to have at one time been a meditative posture, Josephine is looking down to Hatch, with a tender gaze, where he kneels before her with his head resting upon her thigh. She has her hand on his back, moving in soothing circles. Then she looks up to the gathered people, attentive to their presence, smiling. Sai is in the galley, fixing coffee. And Lucinda looks to have the same destination and purpose. "Lu is occasionally malicious?" she is wondering, with a smile to the doctor. "That could be occasionally worrisome."

The sounds of someone searching through cupboards is all that can be heard coming from the galley - until Hatch addresses Saienne, that is. "Hmm?" she asks in distraction, and pokes her head back round into the common area. "Fine an' dandy, xiexie. Pieces comin' together?" She looks around at the green-gold common area and smiles a crooked smile. Seeing the black-clad woman enter, she asks to the room in general, "This is the doctor?"

Lucinda looks up at the mention of her name, probably a good thing for she nearly smacked into one of the benches. Such are the pains of internal walking reflection. "Hmmm?" She questions, her eyes flicking around the commons to everyone assembled.

Having said his part Hatch makes no bones about his intentions to drag Jo off the coffee table and onto to the sofa to do that vile thing so often called, being cuddly. "Yep." He declares, "Got to say the crew is shaping up pretty dang well.. level heads most of the way around. I could tell stories about some of the other ships I've been on, or met... couple of those crews dear god."

Coming in through the fore corridor, Aradia isn't smiling and sure as hell doesn't look in a cuddly mood. Looking around the commons, she turns into the galley to retrieve a bottle of water from the cooler and then says, "Hatch, I want you to see that everyone's armed and knows how to at least point the right end in the right direction. Everyone needs to be run through security procedures in case of an emergency and to know what needs doing if we're boarded."

Josephine yelps only a little as she is unceremoniously dragged from her serene perch onto the couch. "Hatch, you're going to start making folks nauseous," she gently warns, untangling herself just enough to sit up as the Captain enters the room looking like a barely contained storm and saying what she says, which instantly changes everyone's mood, at that.

"Hey I'm in a good mood, sue me." He starts to respond as Ara steps into the room and lays down what she needs him to do. Hatch dosen't move till Ara finishes what she has to say, "Suppose I should go get properly dressed today then." He's been lounging around in shorts and loose shirts all week. After planting a careful kiss on Jo's lips he starts to rise to get things organized.

"Mornin' everyone." Kael says as he walks into the commons, every footfall eliciting a little 'thump'. He's rotating his right shoulder clockwise, left hand on it, stretching it out in a way as a yawn forms and then escapes from him, "What've we got fer food.." his feet start carrying him in the direction of the fridge. Kael's eyes drift over Aradia and he gives a nod towards her, noticing the 'storm' like qualities as well.

Lucinda nods in Saienne's direction, the time for idle chit-chat has been sucked into the same black hole as Aradia's mood. Her pursuit of coffee seems to be excelerated by the captain's forboding comment. She quickly fills a cup of the black liquid, turning her back to the assembled masses as her already pale skin drops to a lighter hue.

"Coffee and biscuits," Josephine tells Kael. "We don't really have time for a relaxing meal today, I'm afraid." She stands from the couch when Hatch does and she watches him leave. But her gaze is entirely serious now as she looks back to the Captain. "Why, praytell, are we at risk for being boarded, Aradia, and by who exactly?"

"While you all were sleeping peacefully through last night's flight, my dear friend Tatiana was avoiding having her ass shot out o' the skies," Aradia says calmly in response to Josephine. She looks directly to Hatch, him being the only one who'd know what she was talking about, "By the Orion."

It's often hard to phaze Hatch when it comes to danger, some things he's bowled over by with ease. Dealing with women, dealing with his own feelings.. the man's often stunted and stumbling at. You toss him into a hot zone with a jack knife, he'll come back with a fist full of credits and a thousand dollar smile. The comment Ara makes causes him a visiable pause as his eyes dart over to her. Hatch walks over to the coffee cistern to collect himself a mug, "Alright folks, anyone with an able body is going to meet me in the cargo bay in five minutes for training. If you don't have an able body, find someone to drag you."

"Biscuits work.. mmm.. Biscuits.." Kael continues his walk to the fridge, opening it quietly and digging through it before come back out with a biscuit in each hand and one in his mouth. The first sentence caught his attention and he peered over fridge door at Ara, with an interested look sliding over his expression. He pulls the biscuit out carefully, finishing off the bite of biscuit in his mouth before saying, "Bein' shot at? She alright, Cap?"

Josephine is frowning now, quite distinctly. But to her credit, she looks neither panicked nor afraid. "If you're going to put a gun in my hands and expect me to be ready to..shoot someone, then I don't suppose you would mind telling us what ship is the Orion and at least a brief summary of why they mean hard business?"

Lucinda takes a swig of coffee as if steeling herself up for something. She turns slightly, not quite facing Kael, "If she wasn't I would have heard about it before now." She steps out of Hatch's way avoiding eye contact.

"Not at all," Aradia says to Josephine before she assures everyone, "Tati's fine. Few dings in the Delphi's hull but her wife is...a damn good pilot." Turning to lean back against the counter behind her, she goes on to say, "As for the Orion. It's an APC. Yes, Alliance. As for whether there's actually Feds running the ship, that's another matter altogether. A few months ago, the Delphi came on a Condor class ship floating dead out in the Black. Everyone onboard had been slaughtered, 'cepting a few folks who were on their way to dead. The Orion showed up and...took over while Tati and a few others were doing recovery/exploration on the wreck. Something smelled off to Tati about the whole thing so when she got back, we took...I've got someone investigating who 'n what's running the Orion but as of yet, I ain't had no news come back."

It appears Hatch either knows or has no need for explantions here, as he starts down the hall to the stairs that will take him to the cargo bay. He turns about about halfway down the hall, leaning his shoulder upon the wall and just watches for now.

Saienne emerges from the galley herself, her biscuit hunt abandoned, and, addressing both Hatch and Aradia says: "Right you are." A beat, and a glance across to Josephine. "That don't sound like a happy situation," she says of Aradia's explanation. "Did your friend get anythin' from them that were still breathin'?"

Kael wolfs down the first, already slightly eaten, biscuit in another bite, followed by the second one. Holding the third one still as he listened to the story. Upon it's completion, the third biscuit met it's demise and he gives just a couple simple nods before heading off in the direction Hatch went. He tosses a wave to everyone in general, still not risking talking as he tries to swallow the last biscuit.

Josephine keeps her gaze on the gathered crew, perhaps observing their reactions at the Captain speaks. "Well, that's peculiar," she admits. "Although it doesn't quite explain why you expect them to come after us now in such a serious way. Nor how you expect that arming an entire crew of mostly non-combatants will give us any increased hope of survival if they are that intent on causing us harm."

Lucinda crosses into the galley, tossing out the rest of her coffee and quickly cleaning her mug. Busy work aside, she pauses with both hands on the counter, hanging her head and simply listening to the others.

Hatch nods to Kael as he stars down the hall, aside from that he simply waits. Seeing who else is going to come down the hall and what else they infer from his intentions.

Saienne rubs the stubble on the back of her skull with her free hand. "I expect your Captain is just tryin' to look after your interests, an' all," she says quietly, stepping out to follow Kael - although she doesn't walk as far. "I surely don't sound like these folks would pay any attention to whether you were armed or not. Ain't it better to have a fightin' chance?" Sai glances at the doctor as she passes into the galley. "Jian dao ni hen gao xing (glad to meet you)," she says, politely. "I think there's still some coffee sittin' there..."

"They're not after us, they're after the Delphi, for now," Aradia says. "'n I don't know if the Feds are chasing down Tati or just folks pretending to be Feds 'n I don't know which is worse to be honest, but I ain't seeing there's really any choice here in whether or not I cover her ass and see she's kept safe until her boss gets here 'n can do what needs doing." Her hands on her hips as she pushes off from the edge of the counter, she breathes out with a quiet sigh and says, "Most of the crew ain't non-combatants, Jo. Just most of us are reluctant to shoot at somethin' that's breathing and got a heartbeat. Don't mean as we shouldn't be able to if we got to." Aradia also ushers everyone downstairs into the cargo bay so that Hatch can start bootcamp.

Kael gives Hatch a bit of a nod in return, saying as he goes past, "Got any knives too? Lost my old one... dandy survival knife.." His feet fall upon the deck, each step making a pointed, metallic 'thump' against the decking.

Josephine nods. "I don't see the harm of people brushing up on their skills so at least they don't shoot themselves in the foot. Fine, then. I appreciate you taking the time to explain. And now that we've all heard the explanation," she says to the others, "It's time to follow orders. Come on, folks."

Lucinda straightens away from the counter, heading towards the appropriate corridor. "Still have one minute twenty three seconds, by my count. But I could be off." She mumbles, mostly to herself.

Hatch smirks a shade and jerks his head in the direction of the cargo bay, "Get yer as moving Kael, we'll see about that when we all get downstairs." He continues to wait looking at his watch and looking, calling down the hall as he catches wind of doc's comment. "You taking into account my poor sense of time and the time it will take me to toss you over shoulder and haul you down to the bay there Lu?"

Kael let's out a laugh as he hears Hatch's response to Lu, shaking his head from side to side as he makes his way off to the bay at a leisurely pace.

Lucinda grumbles still, "Just remember that, Richard, next time I have you and a needle in the same room."

Cargo Bay, Grace O'Malley
==============================================================================
Hatch comes trooping down the stairs after the last of the crew, stopping about halfway to plant his backside down upon the steps. His heavy boots ring out as he plants them firmly, "Okay, everyone settled in were going to start the fun after we do a bit of Q'n'A sound good?"

"Sure ting boss." Kael says, giving a bit of a shrug as the corner of his mouth pulls up into a bit of a smirk. He's standing down there with the rest of them, feet shoulder width apart and arms crossed, looking fairly relaxed.

Saienne trails down into the cargo bay after Hatch, absent her coffee cup and now with both hands shoved deep into her trouser pockets. She maintains her distance from Grace's crew, even though she has joined them down here. Her sleeves are rolled up to her elbows, and she views Hatch with no small amount of trepidation. "Depends on the kind of questions you're plannin' on askin'," she murmurs, smiling her crooked smile.

Josephine was one of the first to arrive but now she stands with the others, looking serious, attentive, and perhaps a little unhappy.

With a twist of his lips Hatch nods first to Kael, "I'd say at ease solider.. looks like I'm a bit late in that respect." He chuckles softly as his eues move over the rest. "Well I ain't asking for measurements Sai, I can think of at least two women, nope three that would kick my tail you included. Then we'd have to worry about what doc would stick me with this time." He seems rather jovial over all considering the situation. "Anyway, what I want to know first off is." He raises slowly to stand on two steps leaning at the railing as he speaks, "Who of you are for whatever reasons completly opposed to defending yourself from an person who is trying to harm you, take your life, or harm slash take the life of someone on your crew who is close to you? I need to know this before we start."

"I will defend the lives of my fellow crewmembers," Josephine replies quietly, not hesitant to lift her voice that it may be heard. "I would prefer if that didn't mean touching a gun, but.. Captain's orders. I'll learn what you have to teach."

Kael shakes his head and lets out a bit of a chuckles at Hatch's first comment, givin' a bit of a shrug. To the question though he just smiles. Nothing more, nothing less. Just a smile slipping over his mouth at Hatch.

"I ain't got no objection to defendin' myself," says Saienne, evenly and seriously - and as loquacious as ever. "Or defendin' anyone else who needs it." She pulls a hand out of her pocket and begins to inspect her fingernails carefully. "I ain't over-eager to go takin' the fight to folk, but if they're intent on bringin' it to me..." A pause, a shrug, and a lop-sided smile. "Well, as far as I see it, there ain't no other option."

Coming down a few steps behind everyone else, Aradia moves over to stand beside Josephine, her arms folded loosely across her stomach as she says, "I'd prefer it, too Jo but we don't always get what we want 'n I ain't asking anyone here to do anything more than know how to arm themselves 'n how to use it, /if/ they're put in a position to have to."

Lucinda doesn't say anything to the affirmative, but doesn't say anything to the negative either. She just stands there, looking like a scolded Finnian who got his hand stuck in the jam jar.

"All I'm intrested in at the moment is that people know how to hold there own if it comes down to it, and what we have options of on board Grace, if we get boarded." Hatch says as he comes down a couple steps. "I know Ara, and she's not to fond of bringing the fight to them unless we have no other option, were not out here to be predators, or crazies. Matter of fact guns are a last resort, but knowing how to use one in case of it. Were going to end on firearms use were going to start with tactical consderations. How many exits does Grace have?"

Whether anyone else knows or not, Aradia speaks up and says, "Foreward loading cargo ramp," and then nods to either side, "Star and Portside airlocks," before she gives another nod back up the stairs over her shoulder. "'n the shuttle bay, if it came to that. That's where y'all go for emergency evacuation out in the Black."

Kael glances over towards Aradia, nodding a little, he had forgotten about the shuttle bay.

"...an' it's a gorram good job you ain't askin' measurements!" Sai says, a little belatedly. "Gong de Tian!" She listens to the others' responses, nodding occasionally - or frowning. At Hatch's second question, she replies: "'Fraid I ain't got the foggiest idea." As the Captain raises her voice, Sai turns in that direction and listens - following with her eyes the directions being given.

Hatch nods to Ara, "Aye, thats correct and in the case of an boarding those are going to be our points of entrance. So keep those in mind, learn where they are and know what firedoors are near them. Or primary objective in the case of a boarding is to contain and control the invaders. Therby making sure we are safe as possible.. and keeping them out of some primary areas of the ship. We need to keep them out of the engine room and the bridge. What I'd like you all to do later is to walk the ship, see what halls lead to where, and at what points they can be closed off by fire doors or bulkheads to contain the problem to non secure areas as well as keeping us as safe as possible even if sleeping. What you need to consider is this will give us time to mount a defense, and alert the rest of the crew if possible."

Lucinda shuffles her feet slightly, changing weight from one to the other and back again. She nods to the lecture, though doesn't glance towards the exits when they're indicated.

Remaining quiet, Aradia just nods, her gaze shifting to everyone else gathered before returning to Hatch. She's been through this a time or fifty under Hatch's security briefings and protocol proceedings, which is why she's letting him run the show.

Kael gives a nod as well, looking over the rest of everyone, catching the Captain doing much of the same. His eyes also trace about the surroundings, taking time to gather in the general lay out of the area. After a bit of that, he looks back to Hatch, giving a much more succinct nod.

Hatch slaps a thick palm down upon the rail, causing it to humm with vibration. "Everyone got it! Defense, defense, defense.. keep thinking it. If you've got personal questions on how were going to do this I'll be avalalbe to take them. Lucinda, as your role in all this is very important.. your the woman to go to for medical emergency solitions, and inthe case of a boarding party were bound to have the, would you be willing to go over some basic medical procedures to follow in case of trauma?"

Saienne regards Hatch with a deadpan look. "Fought enough gorram rearguard action to have a reasonable workin' knowledge of defence, don't you fret none." She grins crookedly. She leans back against some nearby solid piece of ship. "Long an' glorious history of not takin' the fight to them, an' all."

Lucinda jumps as Hatch's hand comes down on the railing. As eyes start to turn towards her, her spine straightens and she finds her tongue. She holds up her hand, five fingers outstretched. As she goes through the list, she ticks them off by curling in each digit. "Stop the bleeding. Stay calm. Stay conscious. Get out of the way. Find me." Her voice is clear and professional...and a bit cold. "And if you can't do those things for yourself, your buddy better." - masterful advice from the doctor, gratefully received

Circling around to a nearby crate, Aradia pulls herself up onto it to sit, her legs hanging over the edge as she nods to Lucinda and says, "'n what if the problem is that they ain't bleeding? What if it's something in the air, or a burn or somewhat?" Turning her head to look to everyone else, she says, "Don't know how many of you ever spent a whole lot o' time on ships but a fire out in the Black ain't pretty. Can't just jump out the window 'n call a fire patrol in to put it out."

Kael watches Lucinda intently, listening to what she's saying and giving a slow nod in comprehension of what she's saying. He opens his mouth for a second then closes it as Aradia speaks up and, incidentally, asks exactly what he was going to. He turns himself a bit more to face her, seemingly quite curious of the answer himself.

Hatch comes over the railing dropping the last few feet to the floor, his knees bending to soak up the impact as he starts walking across the floor. He's letting the medical officer do her thing, after all it's her place to put down the plans in case of such things as vaccume exposure, smoke intilation, chemical burns, so on and so fourth. No one person can forsee every potential problem, but having some format is good.

Saienne also turns expectantly to Lucinda for her advice on burns and other injuries. Reaching up with one hand to the short hair on the back of her head, she runs long fingers through the spiky stubble in an absent, thoughtful gesture. At the second part of Aradia's statement, she says quietly: "Isolate it," and her tone is serious again. "An' vent it if you're able. If you ain't -" she shrugs "- well, wait an' see, I reckon. An' possibly pray."

Hatch giving Doc a little more time, walks over to one of the lockers in the cargo bay and starts to crack it open to take inventory. He's not been about this in a good long time, been slacking in this department so a good idea for him to get things together.

Lucinda clasps her hands behind her back, answering the unphasing questions. "If the air is contaminated the ideal remedy are the Black-walk suits." Referring to their space suits. "Each has their own self-contained oxygen system. Last resort, use a wet rag over your face to help filter the air, but that's only a temporary solution. Burns. Run water over minor ones. Most med kits contain a topical ointment or spray to help relieve the pain. Severe burns require antibiotics, immediate pain medicine to head off shock, and then debridement. Which isn't pretty and best done in Med Bay. If its chemical, remove the contaminated clothing, rinse the affected area...." She could go on, but she needs a breath and to see if anyone has any other specific questions.

Kael gives another small nod, trying to take in all the information. He uncrosses his arms putting them behind his back, one hand holding the other at the small of his back. His eyes every so often flick over to Hatch, as he's pretty much the only one moving about to any great degree.

Smiling a little at Lucinda, Aradia says, "Thanks Lu, I think that's more 'n enough to give us a general idea." Looking to everyone else again, she says, "If you want to know more then go see the doc 'n have her show you exactly what 'n how and where." Nodding toward the med bay, she continues, "There's a general firstaid box just on the inside o' the bulkhead there on the wall and another on the other side next to the lift. You've probably also all seen them in the fore 'n aft corridors, the commons and up in the shuttle bay...and one on the bridge."

Hatch draws out of the locker a sleek looking bullpup configured rifle with a mild raise of his brow and a side long glance at Ara before he pops the magazine into his palm, slips it into the back pocket of his shorts, racks back the slide to clear the chamber. A single shining shell pops into the air, rotates once before the first mate snatches it out of the air and pockets it too. He raises the weapon to shoulder once it's clear and looks down the sights... nods and turns around lowering the firearm, notibly his finger lays near the trigger but never drifts onto it. "Okay, for the most part we won't be needing things like this on board in case of an boarding.. still. Who's unarmed?" He looks over the crowd.

Saienne remains unusually silent, still scrubbing at the back of her head with one hand. She nods a thank you to Lucinda, but doesn't ask anything further, and appears to count off the locations of the first aid boxes as Aradia describes them. She raises her gaze to Hatch as he asks his question, and clears her throat. "I ain't carryin' nothin'." Her tone is a little gruff.

Lucinda nods to Aradia, her crash course on medicine at an end for now. "Everything should be labeled in each firstaid box, as well as what its used for, but I am always available for a tutorial." As Hatch starts pulling out the arsenal, Lu's hand raises slightly, indicating her lack of weapon.

Glancing to Hatch and the rifle in his hands, Aradia shifts, her gaze darting away with a brief furrow of her brow before she clears her throat and looks to everyone else declaring if and what they're carrying. Her gaze settles briefly on Sienna, regarding the woman a moment longer before it moves on to look over the others as they speak up.

Kael shakes his head a bit, "I aint armed neither. he turns to look at Hatch, seeing the rifle and giving it a once over. His hands still behind his back, his right hand and left hand hooked between the thumb and index finger, right hand wrapped about the left. His feet settle about shoulder width apart.

Hatch 's fingers curl as he turns the rifle on it's side as he flicks a bit of something crusted to the side onto the cargo bay floor along with the rest of the dust and debree. He shakes his head slowly and lifts the weapon to his shoulder, "Got a couple tazers for non lethal, a few pistols depending on what your wanting.. if your not familiar with a pistol I'd strongly suggest a lightfoot, they are a good quality and accurate. We've got a slipshot fourty fours for those more confident, the rifles are for emergency.. Also a few beanbag glocks, if your intrested in sticking to the non lethals. Personaly, and I make no apologises for it.. if someone is dedicated enough to invade our ship and intend on killing us. I've got no problem with prempting the favor before me or someone else I love is laying on the deck growing cold." His steely blue eyes sweep the crew as he speaks, nodding to each in turn "I'm not going to pick what you want to carry. Each of you needs a sidearm. When armed were going to go over basics if you need them, if not to bad you get to join in anyway."

"Get out the lightfoots 'n for those what don't know how to, see they know how to strip 'em down 'n load 'em up," Aradia says to Hatch. "'n see that Lu 'n Jo are armed with the Ariel's as well. I know it's two guns to get used to but I want 'em both to have options."

"Well..." says Saienne, stepping forward to inspect the firearms with a not inexperienced eye. "I was a gunner way back when, so I din't have much occasion to get all close an' intimate across the trench lines." She frowns. "If you're keepin' the rifles back, I reckon I'd be most effective with a pistol. Close quarters, an' all." She pauses, and looks back up between Aradia and Hatch. "If that suits you, of course."

Lucinda heads towards Hatch, the steel resolve still keeping her spine ramrod straight. She extends a fine boned hand towards him, "I'll take a lightfoot. I'll do more damage to myself with a forty-four than I would others." She glances back at Aradia as she adds to that, and then holds out her other hand, expectantly.

"So grab just a sidearm or ifn we're proficient, a sidearm and a rifle? Or is it, if we're boarded, we head here 'n' snag a rifle?" Kael inquires, his right eyebrow quirking up a bit. His feet stay planted where they were for the moment, hands still behind his back as he looked intently towards the man carrying the LA85.

"Rifles most often come out for ground combat if we run across it, on a ship if your not intimate with a rifle.. and I mean real intimate, it can be as much as a detriment. Swings slower, harder to use at very short range.. and you've got to consider penetration, we'll go over it." Hatch answers as he starts to hand things out as requested.

Josephine stands perfectly still, watchful and listening, but clearly she is entirely well over her head with anything that has anything remotely to do with weapons. Her hands clench slightly once, and she is distinctly frowning.

He continues around the room, handing out firearms and ammunition to each individual. In a couple of cases an air tazer is also passed over. "Alright!" Hatch says after everyone appears to be armed, "Rule number one, you do not draw your weapon if you intend to use it. Useing it may include demenostration, repair, cleaning..." He adds some emphasis to that word before he continues, "But I see anyone waving a weapon around as a threat, or shoving it under someones nose with no provocation. Well, don't make me angry it ain't pretty. Rule number two, you do not place your finger on the trigger of your weapon unless you intend to fire it. Lay your fingar along side the frame, under the guard.. up your nose for all I care, do not finger that trigger unless your prepping to shoot or dry shoot. Rule three... do not point your weapon at anything you don't intend to shoot. Unless were doing an exersise with unloaded and disabled firearms your only going to be point at things you intend to fire at.. NOW! Do you all know where the safe is, and how to load a weapon?"

"Well, ain't that the truth," says Saienne to Hatch about his assessment of the relative merits of rifles within the confined space shipboard. "I ain't shot one in a decade or more, anyhow. Most likely end up shootin' a hole in the ceiling, an' that ain't likely to be a happy endin' for no one." She grins again, and says somewhat wryly. "I do recall I was never too accurate at hittin' the tin cans on the orchard wall, neither." As she is handed the lightfoot and the box of ammunition, she can be seen to handle it competently but without great enthusiasm. The box of bullets gets set on a nearby flat surface. "I reckon," she murmurs in response to his next questions.

Lucinda looks at the weapons in her hand, studying each until she finds the safeties and making sure they are clicked on. Lacking holsters and the sort, she tucks the Ariel into her waistband at the small of her back. Her finger is as indicated on the Lightfoot, well off the trigger and pointed at the floor by her side.

Aradia remains where she's seated on a crate off to one side, watching everyone in silence.

Kael looks at the pistol, his finger resting on the guard as he looks it over, the pistol pointed towards the ground. His hand moves to the slide, pulling it back slightly and checking it, letting the slide slip back in place he looked up to Hatch and nodded, "Yep.. I'm good."

Josephine does not seem all that squeamish about the taser, but, really, someone might as well have handed her a really large hairy-legged spider when it comes to holding and loading the lightfoot. She doesn't do anything foolish. In truth, she seems very focused and steady, listening to every instruction, and watching how the others manage what they have. Unbelievably, perhaps, the usually chatty woman doesn't seem to have anything at all to say.

Hatch walks a slow half circle around the gathering of people with the rifle still raised, using it as a demonstration. "Kael, Sai, I'm expecting you know something about firearms so will be expecting you to assist the others as well as me." He comments as he settles against a crate, "This is a safety, red means ready to fire green or no color means safe. Look on your weapon, find it, make it safe.. most of you already having that done." He does look around to be sure, "Were going to load, and chamber one. Everyone got that down?"

Lucinda stands at the ready, waiting for Hatch's instructions, though something about the way she handles her sidearm makes her seem familiar with the instrument.

Aradia looks mildly perturbed that there's still a rifle being swung around and she says pointedly to Hatch, "If you're going to teach them a lesson, including that onboard Grace is NOT the place for rifles, then perhaps you should put that thing away 'n use something that is suitable."

Kael looks down at his pistol and then racks the slide back once, chambering a round followed pulling the clip out. He puts the clip into his back pocket, the whole while keeping the pistol pointed down and his finger on the guard. He looks over to Aradia and the corner of his mouth quirks up into a bit of a smirk before his eyes turn back to Hatch.

Saienne nods once in assent to Hatch's request, brown eyes cool as she handles the lightfoot with practiced precision - but also evident detatchment.

"Here is what were going to do." Hatch says pointedly as the rifle remains in the crook of his arm barrel pointed to the floor. "Your going to partner up. Two at a time, go to the fireing range over younder.. your going to step up to the line, remove the safety, fire off three rounds. Take your time, take one step back, put the weapon on safe, remove the magazine, lock back the slide. Let your partner fire off three, they will do the same. Then the next set, barring any questions were then going to go over simple maintence of your weapon.." He looks dead at Ara, "And I'm going to clean this rifle before I put away." Seeming a might bit irritated himself, perhaps the swinging around comment. Either way he's declared his intent, any more that could be said is set aside.

Josephine with a gun is about as harmonious as putting tomato ketchup on vanilla ice cream. She pointedly moves to stand a little closer to Kael, apparently expecting him to have a better notion than she of what's going on. And maybe she trusts him to help her not to royally screw up while Hatch and the Captain are otherwise distracted. Her jaw is clenched as she checks the safety, showing it to Kael just to double-check that it's okay. Hatch's latest instructions makes her look a little faint. "I'm not sure I can do this," she says quietly, probably to Kael since he's right there.

Lucinda stares at her weapon for a moment and the ammo that needs to go into it. After a further pause, she loads the weapon. Not with quick proficiency, but not with much fumbling either. She glances up, curious to see who'd partner up with her.

Aradia's shoulders square as she first pulls herself up to sit straighter and then pushes herself off the crate to stand, feet set shoulder width apart as she says evenly to Hatch, her gaze unwavering, "Then you will clean that rifle immediately and it will be returned to that locker before you proceed any further. Dohn-luh-mah?" Her head tilts a little as she adds, "Or you can put it away, like I suggested and clean it when you give the rest o' these folks a lesson on the cleaning."

Kael glances over at Josephine and nods that she was doing it right. He pulls the clip out of his pocket and slips it back into the pistol. He murmurs back to Jo, "S'laright, Jo. It's not that hard. You flip the safety, look down the sights and squeeze. Make sure to squeeze, not pull, very important.. Like you're tightening your hand into a fist." He held the pistol looking down the sights, the pistol's barrel pointed towards the ground the entire time. He looked over to Jo and gave her a bit of a lopsided smile that was meant more as a reassurance then anything else, "You'll do fine, Jo."

Saienne's attention is grabbed and diverted by the voice of command before she even understands the detail of the orders being issued to Hatch. Her eyes narrow slightly, but only slightly, and she turns towards Lucinda. "Looks like it's you an' me, then, Doctor," she says, politely.

He dosen't respond at first, rather sets the rifle down on the table next to the arms locker and his fingers start to move. It's a sight to see really as he focues in on the weapon, flips it over once, reaches under the table for the tool box and cleaning kit inside it. He strips that rifle down in under a minute, scrubbing it down takes a bit more time, and it's back together, loaded, safe with the chamber still empty directly after. Efficent comes to mind as he walks over to the locker punches the code and slips the rifle inside again before closing the door. Nodding to Ara, and starting over toward the firing range as things may be finishing up there in the time it takes him to perform these actions.

Lucinda nods right back at Saienne. "Call me Lu." Hard to be more formal when you're holding a cold piece of metal. No one else seems to be approaching the line, so she'll be the first to bite the bullet. Figuratively of course. With a steadying breath, she clicks the safety off her weapon and fires her allotted three rounds.

Once the rifle is out of sight, Aradia wanders around to stand well back and behind Lucinda as she fires off her shots, watching with her arms folded loosely in front of her and weight offset to settle on one foot. "Good going, Lu," she says with a smile, chuckling as she adds, "I miss the ones up close more than I do further off too. Figure if I'm shooting at something that's moving I'd prefer they weren't that close to me when I started firing anyway."

Hatch continues on his way over, pausing to reach out with the intent of resting a hand upon Ara's shoulder and give a light squeeze. "Sorry." He says in a soft tone really ment only for her. He starts to pass her by after that pause wanting to see how people are doing at the range together.

Lucinda squeezes out three rounds, with each she lines up the target and pulls the trigger. Problem is, she tends to squeeze her eyes shut too, just as the firing pin snicks. "If you give me plenty of ammo, the odds are I'll at least knick someone." She lowers her sidearm, stepping back for Saienne.

Josephine is not quite sweating, but she is certainly tense. "I guess we'll go after the Doc and Saienne have their turns," she says to Kael, in her low serious voice, wincing something fierce at the first sound of a bullet. She looks at Hatch then, but only for a moment before she returns her gaze to the targets.

Kael gives a small nod, whispering, "Yep.. get a feel for the pistol when you're takin' yur shots. You'll get used ta when the trigger gives way, but try not to tense up when it does or at the sound.. Gotta relax inta it." He looks down at his own pistol, making sure it's still pointed towards the ground and not anywhere near anyone, his finger still on the guard. He looks over at Jo then, quirking an eyebrow, "By any chance are ya one of those who studies martial arts?"

"Right you are, then. Lu," Saienne replies. As the doctor makes her way up to the line and lets off her shots, Sai stands well back, clip in one hand and pistol - pointed towards the deck - in the other. "To be honest, Lu, I'd prefer to know you were keepin' your head down in the medical bay, just in case." She shrugs, "But as Hatch made so clear - defence don't often give that luxury." She steps up to the line, passing Lucinda on her way back and offering a crooked smile.

Saienne mutters, as she lopes back from the line: "Ain't shot one of these off in close to eight years." She grins at Aradia. "An' clearly I was better suited to gunnery than to infantry."

Hatch ends up standing off to the side of the range watching as the shots go down range, he dosen't interject with the conversation at hand. Lots of reasons for an exersise like this, not that he mentions them. Though he seems to smile as members of the crew work through the orders given with relative ease. As much as he'd like to step forward to help Jo, he's not going to... least not now. Though there is a hint of softness in his expression as she steps up, and a mild curl of a smile. His gaze shifts over to Ara, where he winks lightly, and continues to stand in place like a watchful monolith.

Hatch continues to stand quietly, not even so much as a bat of his eye as the shots go a bit wide. He nods, and waits for the next person to step up and fire.

Lucinda rubs her hand over a tired-looking face, heading towards a crate that looks mighty comfy all of a sudden. She eases onto it, setting her weapon next to her. At least she's stopped flinching with every round that's fired.

The moment her weapon is in safety mode and the ammunition unloaded, poor Jo begins to tremble from the after-effects of being so tense and of failing so miserably. Stepping away from the target area, she lowers her gaze for a moment, focusing on calming her heart rate and her breathing, of re-centering her focus that she might watch Kael take his turn, learning from her mistakes by watching someone who knows far better what he is doing.

Aradia steps forward as Jo steps back and leans in to whisper something to her with a faint smile on her lips.

Kael gives a bit of a nod, slowly bringing his breath back in after the shots went down range. He lowers the pistol and steps back, flipping the safety and ejecting the clip. Turning to look back at Jo and the rest of them, his gaze shifting to Hatch, "I didn't check... Did I hit the first two?" the corner of his mouth quirks up a bit into a slight smirk.

Hatch raises his brow as he steps forward, "You didn't verify your targets?" He says in a flat tone as he steps up to the range and looks over the targets where all the rounds struck. "Did you intend on leaving dangerous targets active, and not knowing if you'd wounded them?" Hatch's hand drifts across his holster, bringing one of his own weapons to hand. "Everyone unloaded, slide open, safety on.. and standing at the table for cleaning and maintence lessons." Three rounds of his own go down range..
